It's the beginning of week three, and last week I actually ran every day I was supposed to! well, not necessarily on the correct day, but four days of running. I didn't do the cross training days, but, I just feel like I have so little time that I'll take any little bit I can to stare at my word processor and try to pump out a few good paragraphs in whatever story I feel like working on at the moment.
I was supposed to run today, it being the start of week three and all I should have pumped out 2.25 miles, but I ate a big dinner, and it was getting late, so I did some core workouts and push-ups. I'm not staying on top of those like I was over the past few months...but like I said, time, time, time.
I'm getting ready to open an IRA (deviation from the workout update, but I'm still trying to better myself, so =P). I'm a little afraid, partly because I know very little about the stock market, and partly because I hear that there may be a drop in the next few weeks, so I feel it would be better to get in after that drop. But like I said, I know nothing of the stock market, so maybe I'll just open it with the minimum amount of money, and then if nothing happens I'll have a little, and then I'll max it out later in the fall.
I've been thinking about going back to school to study writing, I have this recurring fantasy where I'm some sort of science journalist, but I don't know. The market for news writers seems to be saturated, and collapsing, but I'd like to study writing nonetheless. It probably wont happen. It's too expensive, and I can't really imagine earning a living as a blogger. Graduate school would only be thousands of dollars to pursue what is at best a hobby. And that makes me depressed.

Update
I know, I know. It's been a long time.
My first 5K race is about 7 weeks away, and I've hardly ran in the passed 10 or so days. I've been kind of distracted, going away on the weekends, or just being lazy. I need to get myself moving again. I'll keep track better I promise.

Running in the Rain and Other Things
Ran in the rain today, as you probably already figured out. 3.76 miles (6.05 km) in 30:27. that's 5:05/km. I haven't run for three days, and I kind of pigged out at a family reunion on Saturday, so I'm pretty happy that my time hasn't been too adversely affected, though it certainly hasn't helped.
As for the 'other things'. I feel like I have to decide between working out and writing. I do like to write, stories and stuff, but I feel like I never have time, and when I do have time, I can't focus. I guess that's what the theme of this blog is supposed to be, cutting out all the extra stuff in my life. All the rambling web surfing and pointless TV watching. If it doesn't better myself, it needs to go. Unfortunately, it isn't working. Again, I guess it's about my problem focusing, and I don't know what to do about it.
There's this Libertarian Candidate for the 32nd District here in Dover who got some press over the weekend. It was the first time I heard of him. I like to think I'm Libertarian, but who knows. Maybe I'm more Conservative, but I don't really know the difference. I'm trying to find out more about him. His Blog http://www.willmcvay.com/ I haven't quite gone through all the way, but I was hoping for more specifics on where he stands on some issues, but he's only 25, maybe he doesn't know himself.

A Bunch of Hot Air
For the past few weeks I've been running at night, around 8 o'clock or so, because it's so hot during the day that it's so much more bearable, but I think it's been screwing up my sleeping habit, because I'm up for so long after I run, midnight or 1 o'clock before I actually fall asleep.
But on Thursday and Friday while running, it was so humid out that I felt as though I was breathing water, and I just couldn't push myself through for the whole 30 minutes no matter how hard I tried. I ran 20 minutes on Thursday, and on Friday I decided to only go for a fast 1 mile, and it wasn't even that fast! It was a hard week... and this week will probably be harder again because it's been so long since I've done a full 30 minute run, but a week of low 90's to mid 80 temperatures should help.
Just me complaining a little bit. Excusing myself for my lack of effort this week. And I've been snacking more than usual, so I have to get that under control again, too. There's no excuse for that one.

Everything Else in Life...Kind Of.
Disclaimer: This is not an entry about my workout regime (it's still going quite well, thank you.)
This is about the rest of my life...or at least what I'm going to do with it. Or not do with it. Just a little venting.
A friend of mine is thinking about Law School, so that means that I'm thinking about Law School, just like when another of my friends left his job and became a teacher I, too, thought about teaching. Since I'm stuck at an entry level state government job, I might as well take stock of my other options.
I don't know if I'd be happy at law school. I do have this nagging little man that lives in the back of my head and gives me fantasies of grandeur, that I can change the world, and Law School could indeed help me get there. But, I believe that people are called to do things. Maybe they never know it, or never care to listen, but I am. At least I'm trying...waiting by the phone, if you will.
Is that the end? Or do I have to pick up the phone and make some calls first? I downloaded a practice LSAT test and I'm going to take it tomorrow and see how I do.
But, if I were to be really honest with myself, wouldn't I just be happier in a consulting job, living 20 minutes from the beach, and having enough free time to write novels that will never get published? It's funny that being happy might mean never achieving anything of importance.

Back from Hiatus
Me Surfing. Bad form, I know. I was out there for a few hours and I stood up (kind of) once, and got knocked in the head once, MAN those boards hurt!"There are no limits. There are only plateaus, and you must not stay there, you must go beyond them. " Bruce Lee
I know It's been a while, but I'm back.
I havn't been slacking on my workouts, but I think I've been snacking more...
I changed my crunch routine to only 100, for time and because I read that too many can be bad for your back. I'm still stuck on pushups, I can't crack the limit there, but....
Today I just ran for my 30 minutes and reached 6.01 kms, which means that's 4:58/km which means that's a 24:51 5K!!!!! My goal has been met! I'm sticking with that for a little though, but maybe I can shoot for 24 minutes? who knows.

Fartlek! That's a funny word!
Today
PUSH UPS: Week 5: Day 2: Column 1 www.hundredpushups.com
Total: 105
CRUNCHES: Week 6: Day 2: Column 2 www.twohundredsitups.com
Total: 344
I am totally going backwards on these push ups, but what can you do?
The crunches, on the other hand, I'm totally on track with and I can't wait till I'm finished!
Saturday, May 15, 2010
Run Fartlek
Total: 1 mile (1.61 kms) in 7:13 minutes Avg. Speed: 13.36 km/hr Pace: 4:28/Km
Fartlek is a Swedish word that means "Speed Play". The general idea is to run a distance while varying your running speed: maybe you'll start out sprinting and then go into a light jog and then maybe increasing your speed gradually until you end your run in a sprint. The pace is good, but the sprinting really wears me out, so there's no way I can keep up the 4:28/km for 5 kms (yet).
I'm still running for 30 minutes 3 times a week and then one day I do a one mile fartlek run. Hopefully I'll make it 4 x 30 minutes this week.

Title!
JOG: 30.12 minute jog
Distance: 5.67 km Speed: 11.27 km/hr Pace: 05:20 min/km
I cut down my pace by 10 seconds! That's great. Just need to cut it down 20 more seconds/km over the next few months and I'll be happy happy happy!
My running is coming along nicely, as well as my Crunches, which I have just completed the fifth week of Two Hundred Situps.
My push-ups aren't coming very well. It's hard going, and I can't do more than maybe 20 in a row without taking a few second break. Don't know what to do about that. I'm still redoing week 4 of Hundred Pushups.
And I still haven't gotten a pull up bar. So, as you can see, I'm pretty stuck! Not to worry, though. This is long term, remember.

Hard Habit to Break
Well, I'm in a little bit of a pickle, here.
This week, I had a gap of 5 days between push-up days, at that really hurt my training, I think. I'm starting week 4 over again. It's a little disappointing, but I only have myself to blame. So.

It's a shame!
JOG: 30 minute jog
Distance: 5.44 km Speed: 10.94 km/hr Pace: 05:31 min/km
Trying a little different Format here, so I can better keep track of where I'm going towards my 5K goal of <25 minutes. So my speed has to be Pace has to be 5:00 min/km.
Also, in other aspects of my life, I finished a Novina, praying for 9 days, of Divine mercy (for more information, follow this link http://thedivinemercy.org/message/devotions/novena.php. And when I said the chaplet each day I was in the adoration chapel, I looked forward to going there every day, and I still do. Maybe I'll see if there's an open hour I can sign up for.

CATCH UP!
OK, so it's been a while, but seeing as how this blog is mostly for me, I DON"T CARE. I can write as often as I want...And I don't really want to catch up, so let's suffice it to say that, yes, I am still on track for One Hundred Pushups and Two Hundred Situps and my running.
The thing is, I took an extra day off this week, and when I finally did my day of situps yesterday, it was exceedingly difficult. I should have done push ups yesterday, but I donated blood, and they said no strenuous activity, so...
Also, my running today was difficult, but I just ran on Tuesday, so I don't know why, but I was barley able to finish the 30 minute run, and I had to take a few breaks in between. It made me sad :(
Also, I am incorporating some more deep core exercises as well, the Plank, Side Plank, and the Bird Dog.
OK, so I PROMISE I will update tomorrow with my activities, and I will try try try not to get so backed up again!

titles are difficult to think of...
Today
Run I just wanted to see how fast I could run a mile
Total: 1.01 miles in 6 minutes and 56 seconds
I'm a little confused, because the website www.mapmyrun.com says that my average speed was 8.7 mph, but when I do the math myself, I come out with 9.1 mph. Either way it's much faster than I'm usually running, and it gives me a pace of 6:54, and if I ran that fast for a whole 5 K, I'd be finishing in 21:27.6, which isn't bad at all. I was in a little bit of a rush today, but I wanted to get some running in, so this is what I did. I'll be going for 30 minutes tomorrow.

PUSH UPS: Week 4: Day 2: Column 2 www.hundredpushups.com
Total: 128
CRUNCHES: Week 3: Day 3: Column 2 www.twohundredsitups.com
Total: 156
So, it's important to remember that these push ups and crunches aren't consecutive. The theory is that, eventually, you will be able to finish 100 consecutive push ups and 200 consecutive crunches, but for now I'm doing smaller sets, and boy, today was the first day that I was able to feel the push ups in my chest and not just my arms, and today my stomach still feels tight, so I'm happy with the progress I'm making.
PULL UPS: 6 sets of 2 negatives.
I've been kind of slacking on the pull ups, so not very much progress. Don't really know what to say.

I felt good for this whole workout today. I'm looking at building a pull up bar for my basement, but I need to clean my basement first :(. I'm not exactly ripped yet. I know it won't be a quick and easy thing, but I feel good doing it.
Today
JOG: 30 minute jog, 5 minute cool down
Total: 3.87 miles in 35 minutes Walking: 0.34 miles in 5 minutes
Jogging: 3.53 miles in 30 minutes
Not much to say, other than I am very happy with myself :) Right now I'm running around 7 miles an hour, which is an 8:30 mile, so that means that I run a 5K (3.11 miles) in about 26:26 minutes. My goal, is to I have to increase my pace to 8:04, which will decrease my time to 25 minutes, by the end of the summer. In the fall I'm running at least one, but maybe two 5Ks. One is sponsored by Dogfish Head Brewery :) the DOGFISH DASH!!! The other one is up in Pittsburgh, where my sister goes to school. I have all summer to train, maybe I'll be able to run a sub 20 minute race come September? We'll seeeeeee!

The Triumphant Return!
Whoa! So, I was out of town all last week and just haven't found the time to write, but I'm back, and I'm going to go through last week pretty quickly. Here goes

JOG: 5 minute walking to warm up, 5 minute jog, 3 minute walk, 17 MINUTE JOG!!!! five minute cool down
I was very glad that they had a workout room, but I haven't run on a treadmill since high school. I don't know what allowed me to run for so long. Maybe I was running at a more consistent/slower speed? Maybe the room was climate controlled? Maybe it was because it was right when I woke up in the morning(6:30)? Whatever. When I got off I felt like the world was coming towards me, and I don't know if that's a side effect of running in place, or if I just over did it.
Wednesday, April 14, 2010
JOG: 5 minute walking to warm up, 20 minute jog, 3 minute 40 second walk, 6 minute 20 second walk, 5 minute cool down.
So, I had planned on taking it easy today, maybe just walking, or maybe going onto a stationary bike, but there were more people in the gym today than yesterday, and there was this one girl that was in the same meeting as I was. O great, now I have to try to impress her, so that's how I wound up running 20 minutes...nothing like a cute girl to motivate you :) Only later did I find out she just got engaged. Go figure.
I begin thinking that, during the summer, it might be a better idea to run in the morning before work, that means I would have to wake up at least 40 minutes earlier. Maybe...

Terribly hard today, I guess it could have been worse, seeing as I haven't done push ups since Tuesday and yesterday was the first day that I just didn't do anything. The crunches hurt my back.
I'm so tired from this week...I think it's because I woke up so early to jog...I don't think it'll go over well if I try to do that all summer. We'll see, I guess, but running in the afternoon is sooo draining when it's hot!

Jogging: 3.57 miles in 30 minutes
Alright. So I reached my first big goal in jogging for 30 minutes. I kept my pace as near as I could to what I was running on the treadmill, around 6.5 mph, and the weather was nice and I just went for it. I felt sooo good for finishing! My right ankle sort of hurt afterward, but other than that, It was great!
THE END! (or just the beginning, really)

PUSH UPS: Week 3: Day 3: Column 2 www.hundredpushups.com

Jogging: 3.57 miles in 30 minutes
Alright. So I reached my first big goal in jogging for 30 minutes. I kept my pace as near as I could to what I was running on the treadmill, around 6.5 mph, and the weather was nice and I just went for it. I felt sooo good for finishing! My right ankle sort of hurt afterward, but other than that, It was great!
THE END! (or just the beginning, really)

Sunday, Funday
CRUNCHES: Week 2: Day 1: Column 2 www.twohundredsitups.com
Total: 90
Again, the same as on friday, around sit-up #74 or so I started losing the technique. I guess there's nothing much I can do about it...
JOG: Same as friday: sets of 4 minutes jogging and 3 minutes walking.
Total: 3.43 miles in 48 minutes Walking: 1.46 miles in 19 minutes
Jogging: 1.97 miles in 16 minutes
It was pretty hot today, in the upper 70s, and I think I may have gotten a sunburn :( . The heat just makes running feel like a chore, but it didn't help, either, that I went out at the hottest part of the day. I'm going to be in Albany this week for work, and I hope the hotel has a gym, because I'm not looking forward to running around a strange city.

Walk About
4/10/2010
PUSH UPS: Week 2: Day 3: Column 2 www.hundredpushups.com
Total: 70
I don't know if I cheated or not today...I took a pretty long break between the 3rd and 4th set.
WALKING: 2.44 miles in 33 minutes and 7 seconds.
Did some errands around town, so I decided to walk to them. It was a pretty nice day out, so I'm happy.
I feel like I should just fill up this space, but seeing as it's pretty darn late, and I'll be posting again in a few hours for today's workout, I'll leave it at this.

Running and Tacos, soul mates?
CRUNCHES: Week 1: Day 3: Column 2 www.twohundredsitups.com
Total: 84
Did good today. Around sit-up #74 I felt like I started losing the technique, I guess I was just getting tired from it all, so I did the last 10 as best I could and went out for a run.
PULL-UPS: 10 sets of 1 negatives
So, pull-ups are reeeaaally hard to do if you're a weakling like I am, and untill www.twentyfivepullups.com is up and running, I'm on my own. I used this article from www.artofmanliness.com. But now that I'm surfing a little bit, I just found www.twentypullups.com! Looks like I'll be trying this out.
Right now I'm attempting to do them from this stand-alone bench swing that my parents have in the back yard. The bench swing hangs from a bar, so I take the swing off and do the pull ups from the cross bar, but it's pretty low to the ground to begin with, so that I can't even hang from it without practically sitting on the ground (the curse of long monkey-arms). So I try my best, but I really have to set up something better.
JOG: Today I began and ended with 5 minutes of brisk walking. I jogged for 4 sets of 4 minutes with 3 minutes of walking between sets.
Total: 3.48 miles in 35 minutes Walking: 1.45 miles in 19 minutes Jogging: 2.03 miles in 16 minutes
I can't believe that two days ago it was 87*F! Such a difference today at 63*F, I felt like I could just keep going and going, but alas. I felt good through the run, my legs were a little chilly because it was pretty windy. Towards the end I was getting a little pain in my right foot ankle. Got to watch out for that. After the run, I made some killer tacos for the fam. It's not an exact recipe, and I changed it a bit, but I guess that's what real taco's are, just throw together whatever you got, wrap it up in a tortilla and eat it. May not always be pretty, but it sure is tasty!

Shun the Mush!
CRUNCHES: Week 1: Day 2: Column 2 www.twohundredsitups.com Total: 59
I've been trying to do this challenge for a few weeks, but it never felt good. I was confused about the 'proper' crunch form, and I started just doing full sit ups, but my back was always doing this arch thing, and I was afraid that the pain could cause serious problems. So, I watched this guy, who, though a little flamboyant (just look at those shorts), really helped, I think. Today's workout felt good, and my back never went into the arch that I was having problems with.
JOG: Didn't go for too long. My legs were still kind of wonky from Monday's run, and Mom wanted to play a little bit of tennis, so I thought I'd go light today.
Total(walking and jogging): 2.12 miles
I walked briskly for 10 minutes, going about .83 or a mile (according to www.mapmyrun.com) Then I started jogging. I checked my stop watch as I approached half a mile, and it read 0:00:03. Three seconds! Somehow I started and then stopped it at three seconds, but, you know what? I didn't care. As a matter of fact I felt an incredible sense of freedom. I have always run for time, and it just felt good to not count down to myself "OK, just keep going for another minute. OK, just keep going for 30 more seconds." So, I jogged for about .6 of a mile, and I think it took me 5 or six minutes to jog that distance, but that's just a guess. Then I walked for 3 minutes and then jogged my second distance. I began to run into a headwind and, while it was a cool, and should have been welcomed after the oppressive 87*F heat today, it was just too much. It felt like I was running half as fast as I did the first distance. But I went as hard as I could manage for 4 minutes and then walked back home in seven minutes. Not a major workout, but ok for the heat and the wonky legs.
I'm basically following the training schedule I picked up at http://running.about.com/od/getstartedwithrunning/ht/getstarted.htm (I'm somewhere between week 3 and week 4).
I've done this training before, for the past two summers, And this is where it all started.
A few years ago I thought "Wouldn't it be awesome if I could actually accomplish something?" And for some reason or other that translated to "Wouldn't it be awesome if I could run a marathon?" And me, not having worked out since playing soccer in Highschool, started running. It lasted the summer, and the fall, but come December of that first year, I kind of stopped. Then spring came, and I didn't really start again, and summer came, and I started again, and then fall came, and I stopped again.
I think one of my problems was that all I did was the running. I didn't change my diet. I didn't do any weight training. I didn't see any real results, and I plateaued at jogging three sets, for 10 minutes, three days a week.
But now I'm going all out, I'm going to get fit, not just for a marathon, but for life, and this is my training log.
